The main airlines that fly the Sydney to Melbourne route are Qantas, Jetstar, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue. The cheapest prices will always be those booked direct through the individual airline website, but the best place to get a comparison of the flights is at Webjet.com.au.

You would be foolish to book through Webjet, as a $19.95booking fee is charged for a return journey, but in terms of weighing up the options it is a fantastic resource.

For example, picking random dates of 04 October 2010 for the Sydney to Melbourne flight, with a return from Melbourne to Sydney on 18 October 2010, Webjet comes up with a whole host of options at different times on those days.
Tiger Airways cheapest flights
The cheapest deals in this instance are with Tiger Airways – AU$38 for a one way flight or $53 if you wish to check in luggage. But all four airlines have deals for $105 or less.
Sydney to Melbourne Avalon flights
You may also wish to fly into Melbourne Avalon airport than Melbourne Tullamarine – which is certainly more useful if you’re planning to go down the Great Ocean Road. This is flagged up too (and deals are available for from AU$49 with Jetstar).
Booking direct with airlines
Webjet won’t like me for saying this, but just remember to use it as a way of finding flight times and price options – then book direct.
