Flights from UK to Australia with South Africa stopover
Flights to Australia via South Africa have come down in price, and it is now possible to take advantage of a Johannesburg stopover relatively cheaply.
Cheapest stopover options
As a general rule, if you’re planning to fly to Australia and build in a stopover, destinations in the Middle East or Asia are the cheapest ones to pick. Until recently, going via Africa would be a costly diversion.

However, increased flight capacity from Australia to Johannesburg now means that it is possible to build a South Africa stopover into a round-the-world trip without it costing too much extra.
RTW with Johannesburg stopover
Roundtheworldflights.com offers the opportunity of a Johannesburg stopover with its popular Globehopper ticket. This basically allows four stops in total, including Australia and New Zealand.
Qantas round the world tickets
Flying with Qantas and its codeshare partners (such as British Airways), the ticket allows a Johannesburg stopover in one direction. At the cheapest time of year – between 16 April and 20 June, the ticket costs £575 plus between £305 and £550 in taxes. Precisely how much you pay in tax depends on precisely where you stop.
