Flights to Sydney in Australia around the Christmas and New Year period can be very expensive indeed. Generally, you’re lucky if you can find any return deals for under £1,000.
Searching for flight deals
However, hunt around in the right places, and you can find the odd bargain. Using Kayak, I managed to spot a return to Sydney over the Christmas period for just £880.
Opodo/ Emirates flight sale
This flight is being sold by online travel agency Opodo, and has you flying out to Australia’s biggest city via Dubai with Emirates.
Christmas Eve flight
The outward flight leaves from London Gatwick airport on 23 December 2010, arriving in Sydney at 18.25 on Christmas Eve. This is just in time for Christmas Day – but the catch is that you’re going to be struggling to have enough time to get provisions such as food and alcohol. If you take this offer up, I’d suggest grabbing something at duty free on the way through the airport and ensuring that you have meal bookings for Christmas Day lined up in advance.
Finding cheap hotels in Sydney
At this time of year it’s also an extremely good idea to have a hotel booked in advance. The early you book, the better, as rates can get uncomfortably high.
Return flight to Gatwick
The return leg of this flight leaves Sydney at 06.00 on Saturday 15 January 2011, arriving at Gatwick after a short layover in Dubai at 18.25 on the same day.
Deal assessment
It’s a decent amount of time away, it covers both Christmas and New Year and Emirates is a good airline to fly with – £880 is an excellent price, all told.
