Cheapest flight deals to Sydney from Aberdeen, Edinburgh & Glasgow in 2010

Opodo/ Emirates flight sale: Glasgow to Sydney

Only one airline – Emirates – operates one-stop flights from Scotland to Sydney. These flights depart from Glasgow International Airport and involve a change of planes in Dubai.

At the moment, there are still some very attractive flight sale prices on this route. For example, using random dates in May 2010, I found return flights from Glasgow to Sydney for £664 per person (through Opodo.co.uk). That’s extremely good.

Best airlines for flights from Scotland to Australia

But Emirates sale prices won’t last forever. So where should you look if you want to fly from Australia to Scotland, or you don’t want to fly from Glasgow? Well the three other airlines to look out for are Qantas, British Airways and Etihad Airways.

Qantas and British Airways codeshare agreement

Qantas and British Airways work on a codeshare basis, and connecting flights from Scotland down to London Heathrow can often be worked into the ticket. This involves an extra change of plane in London as well as Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong (wherever the flight in question is routed through), but bags are checked through all the way.

Cost of connecting flight

The cost of connecting from Scotland as part of the flight almost invariably works out cheaper than travelling down to Heathrow by car or public transport. It is also possible to connect from Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports as well as Glasgow.

Difference in price

It is advisable to look at both websites as even though they may be exactly the same flights, the price can be different depending on who you book with. For example, using the same random dates in May for a Glasgow to Sydney return flight, I found it cost £710 with Qantas and £864 with British Airways.

Etihad Airways from Scotland

The other option is Etihad Airways, which works on a similar codeshare basis with BMI and flies via Abu Dhabi. Etihad’s fares aren’t particularly attractive at the moment, but the airline does have fairly regular sales.
