Best flight search sites: Comparison update – Fly.com and Momondo

Metasearch comparison

After publishing my comparison of metasearch engines on prices they generated for flights to Australia, I was contacted with a couple of suggestions. The first was over Twitter by Sam Daams. He suggested including Momondo.com in the comparisons.

Fly.com and Fly.co.uk

The marketing manager of Fly.com also contacted me, pointing out that Fly.com was a different entity to Fly.co.uk and that Fly.com is the bigger site (it is owned by Travelzoo).

Updated comparisons

I had never tried Momondo before, and I had confused Fly.com and Fly.co.uk, so I decided to do the same tests for these two sites as well. Momondo I did soon afterwards on Sunday, so the results for that site are a fair comparison. Fly.com’s results may be a little skewed as I did them today (I also had to change the return date for the London to Melbourne flight as Fly.com only works 11 months in advance).

Metasearch results

The updated results make for interesting reading. But which metasearch engines did the best overall?

In terms of getting the best price, little changed. Travel Supermarket still had a unique best price twice, Zugu had a unique best price once, while Travelsupermarket, Momondo and Zugu shared the best price on the other two occasions.

Scoreboard

The points system from the previous system needs to be adjusted to take in the two new contenders, so now it’s seven for best price, five for second-best, four for third best et until zero for worst. Under the points system, the scores come out as follows:

Travelsupermarket – 29

Momondo – 23

Momondo – 23

Fly.com – 16

Skyscanner – 14

Kayak – 12

Fly.co.uk – 7

Total price with flight search engines

And the total price for all five flights? Well that looks a little like this…

Zugu – £4,116.68

Momondo – £4193.02

Travelsupermarket – £4278.66

Fly.com – £4358.90

Kayak – £4,635.31

Fly.co.uk – £4773.70

Skyscanner – £4,776.13

Again, the major point that this small study illustrates is that it’s best to check prices with more than one metasearch engine before you even consider booking…
