Best time of year to visit Australia
The best time of year to visit Australia depends on which part of the country you are going to. As a general rule, the southern states (New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the bottom section of Western Australia and South Australia) are best visited in the Australian spring, summer and autumn. In practice, this tends to mean between late September and mid-May.
Weather patterns in Northern Australia
The northern parts of Australia (northern Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory) don’t have four distinct seasons. There’s the Wet Season (approximately November to late April/ early May) and the Dry Season (May to early November). There is plenty to do in the Wet Season, but the weather isn’t exactly conducive to a great holiday.
Airfare fluctuations on flights to Australia
However, because the vast majority of the Australian population lives in the southern states and the vast majority of overseas visitors land in the major cities in these states, airfare fluctuations are set accordingly. The cheap flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide etc are generally linked to the seasonal weather – ie. It’s cheapest when it’s coldest.
Best price deals
There are other factors that come into play (prices go up again when Australians are heading to Europe for the European summer), but the best price deals are generally found at times when people are less likely to want to go to southern Australia.
Qantas travel sale 2010: Cheap flights to northern Australia
The great news for those wanting to visit northern Australia (ie. Cairns or Darwin) is that the cheapest flights from the UK head there at pretty much the right time weather-wise.
Take the current travel deals with Qantas for example. Fly from London to Cairns in January 2010, and the flight will cost a minimum of £1,104. Fly in late November and it’s going to cost a minimum of £887.
Cheap Cairns flights: April, May & June 2010
Unless you’re a big fan of rain, you’d be foolish to fly to Cairns at those times anyway. However, fly between 16 April 2010 and 20 June 2010 with Qantas, and the flights will cost from just £668. You’d be hard pushed to find many better London to Cairns prices than that, and if you choose to travel towards the latter end of those dates you should arrive in time for the best weather. A winner every way you look at it…
