Air Miles flights to Sydney, Australia | Are reward flights good value?
Should you use Air Miles to fly to Sydney? How does the value of reward flights compare with Singapore, Buenos Aires, San Francisco or Tobago?
Air Miles/ Frequent flyer schemes
A while back, I said that it was probably a waste of money to use Air Miles or frequent flyer points on a flight to Australia. My point was that you get more value for your miles in other destinations.
Value comparison
Well, earlier today, I decided to test this statement out. Over on sister site Bestflightsales.com, I compared flight prices to all destinations that can be visited using Air Miles, and compared them with the amount of Air Miles needed for a return flight there.
Air Miles flights to Sydney
The results were quite surprising – and Air Miles flights to Sydney came out quite well. Each Air Mile on the Sydney flight was worth 5.96 pence – better value than the likes of Buenos Aires, Tobago and Vancouver although not as good as many Caribbean, Asian and African destinations.
Good and poor value destinations
I expected Sydney to be a lot lower down the value table, but I suspect this is partly because the Air Miles scheme is generous on Sydney flights. Sydney is put in the same bracket as Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, whereas it’s in a separate, more costly bracket with other schemes.
Sydney flights only cost 20% more than those to the likes of Johannesburg, Singapore and San Francisco as well. By comparison, paying for flights with cash to such destinations tends to be more than 20% cheaper.
